Volvo XC40 vs. Mercedes GLA, BMW X1 & Audi Q3

Volvo XC40 vs. Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA: Compare Small Luxury Crossovers in Fort Collins, CO

With its first-class accommodations, versatile cargo space, and convenient physical footprint, the Volvo XC40 delivers a premium blend of luxury and practicality. It's nicely equipped and enjoyable to drive with engaging dynamics and smooth ride quality. Its nimble size makes it ideal for navigating crowded Greeley or Loveland streets. And with Volvo's signature Scandinavian craftsmanship and an available pure-electric powertrain, the XC40 is one of the most compelling compact luxury SUVs in its class.

While Fort Collins-area drivers have plenty of options to choose from in the competitive segment, the Volvo XC40's well-roundedness and appeal are standouts. Here's a quick look at how it measures up against three of its most prominent competitors: the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Volvo XC40 vs. Audi Q3

Performance

The Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 have similar turbocharged 2.0-liter base engines, with the XC40 making 187 horsepower to the Q3's 184. However, if you're seeking a little more power for your Loveland commute, the XC40's optional T5 powerplant (248 hp) outmuscles the Q3 45 TFSI (228 hp) while managing to be a bit more efficient (25 vs. 24 mpg). With extra power and a more responsive transmission, the XC40 beats the Q3 to 60 mph, 6.2 to 7.4 seconds.

Looking for maximum power and efficiency? The pure-electric XC40 Recharge (402 hp) can go 0-60 in ~4.5 seconds and has an estimated range of 223 miles. The Q3 doesn't have an EV option.

Accommodations and Utility

The XC40 and Q3 are similar in size and accommodations. Still, the XC40 offers 1.5 extra inches of headroom and nearly an inch more legroom. However, cargo capacity isn't as close, with the XC40 providing a maximum of 57.5 cubic feet versus the Q3's 48.

Advanced Safety Features

The Volvo XC40 comes standard with a full roster of IntelliSafe driver-assistance technologies, including:

  • Collision Mitigation with Steering Support
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™ ) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Road Sign Information
  • Automatic high beams

Additionally, adaptive cruise control-based Pilot Assist and a Surround View camera system are available for any XC40 model. To get adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera on the Q3, your only option is to climb the trim ladder.

Volvo XC40 vs. BMW X1

Performance

The Volvo XC40 T5 (248-horsepower) is more capable than the X1's 228-hp engine. The XC40 also offers more ground clearance, making it better suited for light off-road travels. And while the XC40 offers the fully-electric Recharge powertrain, the X1 doesn't offer an EV.

Technology

The Volvo XC40 and BMW X1 come standard with large touchscreen infotainment systems and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. However, the XC40 also has Android Auto, which is conspicuously absent anywhere in the X1's lineup. Additionally, while all XC40 models include a 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display, the X1 doesn't even offer a digital gauge cluster as an option.

Advanced Safety Features

The Volvo XC40 comes generously equipped with a full suite of IntelliSafe driver-assist technologies (see Q3 comparison). The X1 only comes standard with collision mitigation and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control is optional for the X1, but it doesn't restart after coming to a stop, unlike Volvo's Pilot Assist. Technologies like lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera aren't found in the X1's lineup.

Volvo XC40 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Performance

The Volvo XC40 T5 outpaces the GLA 250 thanks to its superior horsepower (248 vs. 221). And if you're looking for a pure-electric solution for your daily Windsor drives, the XC40 Recharge delivers driving thrills and more eco-friendly operation. The GLA-Class doesn't have an EV option.

Technology

The Volvo XC40 has a 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen for easier menu navigation, improved map viewing, and better information absorption at a glance. It also comes standard with a 12-inch digital gauge cluster. The GLA 250 has a 7-inch touchscreen, and a digital instrument panel is only available for higher tiers.

Advanced Safety Features

Both the XC40 and GLA come standard with advanced safety features like collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring. However, the XC40 includes many more driving aids on its base trim, like Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, evasive steering, and automatic high beams. These technologies require multiple additional packages on the GLA-Class.
