Volvo has set an ambitious goal as it strives towards a more sustainable automotive future: a 50% pure-electric / 50% plug-in hybrid lineup by 2025. The Swedish automaker is already well on its way, offering a Recharge variant for nearly all of its models. Although, the V90 Cross Country—the sole Volvo nameplate without a plug-in option—includes the new B6 mild-hybrid powertrain as standard equipment.
While Volvo is leaning into pure-electric automobility with models like the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, its plug-in hybrid options allow Fort Collins drivers to explore the EV experience without jumping in entirely. Available for the S60, V60, S90, XC60, and XC90, the Recharge PHEV powertrain delivers potent performance, elevated efficiency, and electric-only capability. And now, Volvo is introducing new Extended Range versions to the US market with a more powerful electric motor and large battery capacity.
Faster and Farther: 2022 Volvo Recharge Extended-Range
Volvo's Recharge PHEV powertrain features a 2.0-liter twincharged engine paired with a rear-wheel electric motor and 11.6-kWh battery pack. In its original configuration, that combination generated 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque and enabled an estimated electric range of 18 to 22 miles, depending on the model. While the power numbers are more than sufficient for spirited and confident driving, the range, while useful, was a bit of a limiting factor. For example, you could drive the ~15-mile trip from Greeley to Windsor, CO, on just battery power. However, returning would require the combustion engine unless you stopped at a charging station.
With the new Extended Range powertrains, Volvo Recharge models equip a larger 18.8-kWh battery pack, increasing range to 35 miles for the XC60 and XC90, 38 miles for the S90, and 41 miles for the S60 and V60. The extra range means you could make the Greeley—Windsor round trip without using any gas. Even longer emissions-free commutes become more accessible, especially if your destination has a charger. Volvo Recharge PHEV models can replenish their battery overnight (6–9 hours) using a standard 120V household outlet and as little as three hours with Level 2 (240V) equipment.
Volvo also added a stronger electric motor, increasing total output to 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. The power boost is particularly evident in SUVs like the XC60 Recharge, whose 0–60 time drops a full half-second from 5.0 to 4.5 seconds.
Other Benefits
The Extended Range upgrades go beyond total output and range. The new electric motor increases rear-wheel power by ~65%, providing enhanced all-wheel-drive control—benefiting low-speed handling, towing performance, and stability on slippery roads. Additionally, the new powertrain enables one-pedal driving, allowing you to speed up and slow down using only the accelerator pedal. The increased battery capacity also allows for remotely pre-heating or pre-cooling the cabin without compromising pure-electric range.
